Brian Brooks lives in New York City where he received the Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography. He’s currently pursuing an Interdisciplinary Research MFA as a student of NYU’s new graduate program, exploring the expansion of the body through immersive technologies. Brian’s self-directed research combines dance studies at the Tisch School of the Arts with interactive digital media and computer coding at ITP and the Tandon School of Engineering.
On stage, his New York City-based performance group, the Moving Company, has been presented at venues including The Joyce Theater, NY City Center, and BAM’s Next Wave Festival. Brian’s work has been presented on multiple occasions by the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, performed in both the Ted Shawn and Doris Duke Theaters, on the Lier Stage, and remotely, through his live-streaming Augmented Reality platform ‘Viewpoint.’
Brian has been commissioned to create new dances for companies including Hubbard Street Dance, Miami City Ballet, and BODYTRAFFIC, and was first-ever Choreographer in Residence at Chicago's Harris Theater for Music and Dance (2016-2019). He has choreographed several off-Broadway productions including A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2013), directed by Julie Taymor, and Pericles (2016), directed by Trevor Nunn, as well as duet productions where he performed alongside NYC Ballet Associate Artistic Director and former principal dancer Wendy Whelan (2012-2019).
